SUBC Sweep U23 Sweeps at Nationals

Starting on Tuesday morning with a convincing four second win in the U23 coxless pair and ending on Saturday afternoon with a near five second win in the U23 Eight, SUBC Men wrapped up a lock on Men’s U23 sweep events at the 05 Nationals. In the U23 pair Ian an Ferg ( Allsop and Pragnell) grabbed two seconds to the first 500 and another 4 seconds to the 1000 to be in an almost unbeatable position at the halfway. The crew were unpressured to produce a 94% prognostic in 6m 44 secs.

Five days later the U23 Eight, anchored by Ian and Ferg again grabbed a huge early lead and looked unlikely to be threatened after that. At the 500 Sydney Uni led by over 2.5 secs and by 4 seconds at the halfway. Earlier the coaches had decided to rest stroke Matt Ryan for his duties as stroke in the NSW Kings Cup crew and with a few seating changes Terrence Alfred was brought into the crew for his second U23 title just a few months after leaving school.

The full eight was Allsop, Pragnall,Clyne, Pat Wilson, Alfred, Chambers, Andrew Wilson and Damon Hietbrink with cox, Toby Lister.

On Friday morning the stern combination had combined to take gold in the U23 Coxless Four, holding out Uni of Qld by 3 seconds.

To round out a quartet of gold in U23 Men the young crew of Will Townsend, Murdoch Gatti, Ed Boyce and Terrence Alfred with Toby Lister had won the U23 Coxed Four after giving away 2.5 seconds to Melbourne Uni in the first 500. This young crew worked their way back into the race with a solid second 500 and then exploded into the lead in the third 500. It was then a matter of hanging on to beat Melb Uni who were coming back as the line approached. Again Sydney Uni won with a margin of 0.88 seconds.

Finally in lightweights Joe Power and Harry Horwitz Rourke combined with ACT Academy to take out the U23 Lightweight Four title.

Five U23 sweep events, 5 National Championships – well done SUBC U23 Men.
