Scullers Shine at 2014 Sydney International Regatta


Sydney University scullers shone strongly at the just concluded Sydney International 2014 Regatta with gold, s silver and bronze medals in the 2014 Nationals, the 2014 Interstate Regatta and World Cup 1 of 2014. Sasha Belonogoff showed his class winning the men’s single scull national title with silver medal to Nick Purnell (also of SUBC). Nick Hudson was 5th; Cam Girdlestone was 7th with Hamish Playfair and Matt Ryan finishing 2nd and 5th in the B final – a total of 6 SUBC men’s scullers in the top 16. The lightweight men’s single scull final saw Ed de Carvalho take bronze with Jack Hanley making his frst senior A final at nationals and finishing eighth. In the women’s open single victory went to Kim Crow with Sydney Uni’s Sally Kehoe taking silver. Due to World Cup representation our top scullers were not able to contest other sculling events at the Nationals. Sally Kehoe and Sasha Belonogoff took out a SU rowing double in the Interstate Single Sculls with Sally winning the women’s event for Queensland and Sasha winning the men’s event for New South Wales. The finals of the World Cup 1 were held Sunday morning. Belonogoff, Girdlestone and Nick Hudson of SUBC with John Linke of Victoria won gold in the men’s quad sculls with China second and Australia 2 third. Hamish Playfair of SUBC picked up bronze in the third boat. Sally Kehoe and Olympia Aldersey took gold from Germany 1 and 2 in the women’s World Cup double scull while Sasha Belonogoff and Cam Girdlestone backed up in the men’s double to get silver behind Lithuania.
