Taree Camp 2016

SUBC started off the 2016 season in fine form, with a number of crews successfully winning their first hit out of the year at the Taree Summer Regatta. Notable results were seen from the women’s side with a dominant performance in both the Scull (Fiona Ewing) and Quad (Fiona Ewing, Olivia Ashby, Carina Simpson and Ash Lister). The men equally showed form with a first, second and third finish in the men’s pair, the win was taken out by Andrew Judge and Angus Robinson. Men’s Scullers Campbell Watts, Jack Hanley and Alex Purnell also produced good wins in the single sculls. The highlight of the regatta was a clear stand out performance by the combined efforts of both the men’s and women’s sides of the recently amalgamated club, with the mixed eight have a start to finish win to take out this event for the third year running. Our photo shows the SUBC mixed eight being presented with medals for winning the Taree Regatta.

Thanks must go to Croker oar manufacturers for donating a thousand dollar gift certificate as the prize for the 1000m mixed eights race, the crew consisted of Andrew Judge, Gus Robinson, Campbell Watts, Jack Hanley, Fiona Ewing, Isobel Sherwood, Ash Lister, Olivia Ashby and coxed by Will Raven.

Erging at Taree (1)

Erging between water sessions at Manning River Rowing Club – January 2016

The strong showing of SUBC at this regatta was a testament to the hard work done by the athletes and coaches over the course of the two week annual training camp held in Taree. This camp allowed great opportunities for all involved from the top end athletes refining skills and putting km’s in the bank leading up to Olympic trials, to the freshest of rowers who were learning the basics having only taken up the sport a number of weeks ago. An impressive example of this was Josha Runde a young boy who after five weeks of rowing, including the camp was able to successfully race for the first time, looking like a natural as he came down the Manning river.
