Sydney University Rowing is pleased to announce the appointment of Gonzalo Briones as our new Women’s Coach – Development. Gonzalo starts with Sydney Uni on 6th October and will work primarily from the Glebe boatshed on the recruitment and development of women rowers from school through to U23 s.
Gonzalo will join Director, Mark Prater, Senior Coach James Macartney and part time coaches Will Townsend and Mike Doyle in planning and coaching the university program.
Gonzalo will take over the role filled over the past six years by AB (Alan Bennett). Alan has this week started as Head Coach of Tokyo University and armed with phrasebooks flew out to Japan, Monday.
While welcoming Gonzalo Briones Sydney Uni Rowing would like record our appreciation of the service AB has given to our Women’s Club and our program over his period with us. AB’s last competition was the Australian Uni Games Rowing where the women’s team won four golds, and the Amanda Young Trophy for the highest points in the women’s competition. Sayonara AB.
Gonzalo Briones (GB) arrives at Sydney Uni with extensive coaching experience. Most recently he coached at Queenwood School and this year coached their 1st Eight to victory in the NSW Schoolgirls Head of the River and four from their crew also won gold in the U19 Fours at both NSW and New Zealand Rowing Championships.
Gonzalo began coaching at RC Labradores in Seville in 1989 and became Head Coach there in 1994. Further stints at coaching with regional rowing federations in Spain followed and also coaching positions on the Spanish Junior, U23 and World Cup teams up to 2004.
After marrying Sydney Uni World Lightweight Quad Champion, Zita van de Walle Gonzalo moved to Australia in 2004 and initially coached at UNSW and then at WA Institute of Sport where he worked with their Junior rowers. He was appointed as a coach on the 2006 Junior Team.
In appointing Gonzalo Sydney University Rowing is looking to develop our women’s squad to be competitive at the top levels of Australian rowing.
