This year three crews from Sydney ventured to England to contest the Fawley Cup ( under 19 Quad Sculls) at Royal Henley. Sydney Rowing Club , the defending title-holders from 2005 lead the charge along with a combined UTS, Sydney, Sydney University crew coached by Shore coach Nick Lloyd and a King’s School Quad cooached by Andrew Randell. Kings and UTS/SUBC/Sydney were on the same side of the draw and met on Saturday morning in the quater final. This was a great race with the composite crew leading to the Barrier and eqaulling the record for this section of the race and holding their lead well into the second half. The Kings crew came from behind to win in the fastest time of the event for 2006 at that point of 6.49.
In the semi-finals Kings defeated Leander/Maidenhead and Sydney defeated Marlow setting up an all- Ausssie final which Kings School won in the slick time of 6.48 with a length the official margin.
The Kings’ crew was stroked by Cam Girdlestone who along with a number of his fellow crew members had represented SUBC at the 2006 NSW Championships where they won the U19 Fours.
Earlier this year Andrew and his Kings rowers were part of The Kings School Eight who won the 2006 NSW Schoolboys Head of the River.
Andrew has previously coached Kings to win the Princess Elizabeth Challenge Cup for School Eights.
