Excellent conditions, a crowded boat park, lots of spectators and fine hot weather were all on hand at Penrith for the biggest regatta of the season to date. Hosted by Sydney Rowing Club the regatta had over 1200 entries and was well supported by all clubs and schools. Sydney University showed early on that the work done by the squad and coaches was paying off. Dan Noonan and Andrew Wilson won the Open Double sculls. This was followed by wins in the Open Eight (composite with UTS 5 SUBC/3 UTS), Open Four, U19 Fours plus some wins and other fine performances in pairs and sculls.
One highlight was the convincing win of Andrew Wilson in his division of the Open Single Scull.
The new recruits for 2005 got of to and excellent start. Terence Alfred, Will Townsend, Ed Boyce, Will Chambers steered by Toby Lister had a convincing win in the U19 Fours.
In the Women’s Open Eight Sydney Uni combined with Mosman to produce a prefessional looking crew that won easily.
The last few races of the day were affected by a severe hail and thunderstorm that whipped up difficult conditions on the water and drenching conditions for those not under cover.
The whole Sydney Uni squad were well pleased with their day and are looking forward to the State Championships next weekend.
