Gold Cup 2009 To Sydney Uni

Saturday March 21st –another Gold Cup Regatta on the famous Riverview dog-leg course. This year marked 125 years since the citizens of Lane Cove presented the famous Gold Cup to St Ignatius College. SUBC entered a scratch crew of mixed Senior A’s and under 23’s. Coming in at stroke was aspiring medico and stroke of the 2009 victorious Kings Cup eight – Terrence Alfred. Terrence with cox Toby Lister were back in the stern combination of that Kings Cup eight. Fellow crew members included new SUBC member and former US national rower Brodie Buckland, members of the 2007 U23 eight (bronze medallists), Mitch Estens and James Goswell along with Andrew Connolly, Al Matthews, Ryan Barraclough and Nick Purnell.

Mosman were eliminated in the heat, Sydney failed to start leaving the main opposition to come from the strong Shore first eight. The uni crew took nothing for granted – in this race – a dash of about 1400 meters with a big turn at the 1000 mark any crew can, be upset on the day.

In the final SUBC took and early lead, built steadily on it to round the “leaning pile with a solid length – in the run to the line university stretched this to around 2.5 length at the finish.
