Aussie U21 Rowers Wrap up 2014 Trans Tasman Rowing

The Australian U21 rowing team travelled to Lake Karapiro in New Zealand late last month for the second leg of the 2014 Trans-Tasman Series. Once again three Sydney University rowers, Alex Purnell, Franc Gourlas and Holly Lawrence and coach Al Matthews formed part of the Australian Team.

The return leg was held in difficult windy conditions. Holly won the women’s  lightweight double sculls, the women’s quad with Alex Purnell winning in the men’s double, men’s quad and the men’s eight, Frankie Gourlas steered the men’s eight to victory having won the same race in Sydney in July.

The Australian team won overall on points on both legs.

This was Al Matthew’s last coaching assignment with Australia and Sydney University for some time – he is heading to South Africa shortly to take up a coaching role at St Andrew’s School.

Alex and Holly are currently back in training preparing for The Australian Boat Race on 26th October.
