Sydney’s famous harbour regatta – the Riverview Gold Cup – has been moved to a new date on 3rd December this year. Held on a unique “dog-leg” course on the Lane Cove River the regatta provides on of the best days of racing and excellnt spectator vantage. Exciting racing occurs as four crews per race round the “leaning pile” and sprint the last 300 metres close to the Riverview shore. In recent years this regatta has been largely a schools reggata with clubs attracted to the Gold Cup eights. This year (the 128th Gold Cup) the program has been updated to allow more participation by rowing clubs with fours, quads and masters eights on the program. The Women’s Gold Cup eight was added a few years ago.
The original Gold Cup was contributed by the citizens of Lane Cove and remains on permanent display at Riverview College and is presented each year to the winning men’s eight – usually by the St Ignatius College headmaster. The winners of the Gold Cup receive the unique “gold oar” and all other winners in other events receive a “silver oar”.
