University Rowing Champs Conclude At SIRC

The Sydney University 2008 Intervarsity Sqiad (pictured) dfeneded its 2007 AUC Champions title with a clear margin over second placed Melbourne. In the Amanda Young Trophy for Women’s Overall Champions Syd Uni came in second behind convincing winners Melbourne. In the overall Men’s Trophy 2008 saw the first awarding of the “BIll Webb” Trophy. After some initial confusion in counting the points it has been confirmed that this trophy has been won in its inaugural year by SUBC – by just 3 points over Queensland. On the final day Queensland proved too strong in the Men’s Eights denying Sydney the chance to create a new club record of five wins in a row in this event. Rowing into a very strong and gusty headwind Queensland to an early lead which they extended to two lengths at the 1000 metre mark. The Sydney eight chased hard and made up ground in the final part of the race but never threatened the leaders with Queensland winning by a length from Sydney and Melbourne in third.
