TIGHT TUSSLE SEES SYDNEY UNI EMERGGE ON TOP AT THE 2022 UNISPORT NATIONALS PERTH

After a three year break the UniSport Nationals were back and held last week in Perth.

SUBC sent a team of 21 rowers and coaches to compete on the Champion Lakes Course.

The event winner is based on points accumulated for placings and on the final day it was clear that it would be a close contest with Sydney cross water rivals, UTS.

Some important performances moved things our way with Jaime Ford and Ella Mentzines winning the women’s coxless pair and Henry Ryan and Ryan Gibson first in the men’s pair.

The men’s coxed four prevailed over UTS giving us valuable points while UTS reversed the result in the women’s coxed four.

In the big boats Sydney Uni won both the men's and women's eights. The women's eight had a convincing win by 12 seconds with UTS second and Adelaide third. In the Oxford and Cambridge Cup the Sydney men’s crew started fast and led well at the 1000 metres with once again UTS doing the best of the other crews – closing the gap to 1.13 seconds at the line.

This win brought Sydney Uni to 41 wins in the Oxford and Cambridge Cup since its inception in 1888 to draw within two wins of Melbourne.

Sydney University took out the Men’s and Women’s rowing point score winning both pennants.

These two pennants were part of the 16 pennants the Sydney University UniSport team won to take out the Overall UniSport Nationals Championship of 2022.

Thanks to all our team and to our UniSport rowing coaches, Don Mclachlan and Alfie Young.
