Sydney University Boat Club 1976 - 50th Anniversary Gold Cup Win

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the successful 1976 Sydney University Boat Club squad. Coached by John St. Vincent Welch, stroked by Chris Noel and coxed by Brian Casey, the squad won the Australian Champion Senior B Eight, Four and Pair, as well as the New South Wales Champion Senior B Eight and Four.
But perhaps the sweetest victory of all was winning the 1976 Riverview Gold Cup, beating the much-fancied Mosman crew in testing conditions. A victory made all the sweeter, given that five of the SUBC crew members were Riverview old boys and very much aware of the history, tradition, and prestige of the event.
The final was stopped after 600 metres by the umpire due to a huge wash that swamped all crews. After emptying their boats at Longueville Sailing Club and North Shore, the crews assembled again at the start. The University crew was in the outside lane and, as the race progressed, was able to head into the turn at the pile with a handy lead which extended to just over three lengths at the line.
Most of the crew were not long out of school and showing their immaturity, much inappropriate celebrating occurred as the finish line was crossed..
Four members of the squad received their University Blues that year and three later went on to represent Australia at the World Championships.
