Sydney Uni Double at Gold Cup

For the second year running both Sydney Uni men’s and women’s eights have won their events at the annual Gold Cup Regatta. With legend Toby Lister coming back to home base for some steering practice the young stroke/ seven combination of Nick Wheatley and Tom Sacre were able to set the tempo required to take control of what can be a very quick race. In the final it was Sydney Uni 2 in lane 1 on the Hunters Hill side, Sydney Uni No1 in lane 2 then Sydney in 3 and Newington in lane 4.

On a very gray and wet afternoon the crews got away to a clean start with Sydney Uni No 1 moving to the lead by the halfway and with the inside lane on the turn they were able to extend the lead top six seconds over Sydney Rowing Club with Sydney Uni No 2 in third and Newington in 4th.

The time 3 mins 58 seconds.

In the Women’s eights it was unfortunate that only Sydney Uni and local schools entered the women’s event. It is hard to understand why other local clubs do not see the value of promoting their rowing programs in front of the best school rowing audience in Sydney. Our women’s wight won by 7.5 seconds from Pymble Ladies College and LOreto Kirribilli.
