Day 2 started early as regatta officials tried to complete the major U19, 21, 23 and Elite Championships before the expected overpowering afternoon heat. Our day started with a win for Richard Allsop as part of the AIS crew in the Men’s Elite Coxless Four. SUBC was second with the other AIS crew third and SUBC fourth. Next followed bronze in the Women’s Four behind the two AIS crews (Charlotte Walters came away with silver as part of the AIS).
Ashleigh Peppernell and Emma Costello picked up bronze Women’s U23 pair. Next race Richard Allsop in his AIS combination with Dom Grimm won the Men’sU23 pair with James Goswell and Al Matthews getting the silver.
Charlotte Walters finished third in the U23 singles. In the Men’s U21 Single Final SUBC rowers, Nick Purnell and Sasha Belonogoff made it a Sydney Uni quinella with a first and second finish.
In U21 pairs Ashleigh Peppernell and Beatrix Shelldrick took gold and in the next race Will Gilbert and Ryan Edwards took silver just behind an outstanding pair of Nick Barnier and Angus Moore (coached by Jaime Fernandez) from Capital Lakes / Canberra..
In the elite big boats –the men’s and women’s Championship Eights Sydney Uni completed a double – taking out both events. The women’s eight, stroked by Sally Kehoe and backed up by 2007 and 2008 World lightweight quad champion Bronwen Watson and 2006 world double scull champion Liz Kell led all the way finishing 4.5 secs ahead of Uni of Qld.
In the Men’s Elite Eight – SUBC notched up it’s first one two finish with the Sen A crew winning by ten seconds from our U23 eight. Mosman were just two seconds astern in third. In the M8+ this was our fifth win in a row – the first win since 1975 was in 2005. The Q L Deloitte trophy and the medals were presented by SUBC Rowing Program Coordinator Chris Noel.
In other events Sydney Uni won the U21 Quad Scull, had two members of the winning Women’s Elite Lightweight Quad, won the Men’s Elite Lightweight Quad, Women’s Elite Quad and Fergus Pragnell was in the AIS crew that won the Men’s Elite Quad from another full SUBC crew.
Overall probably the club’s most successful ever NSW State Championships. Sydney Uni retained the NSWRA Honours Trophy gaining around 230 points with Sydney second on around 90 points.
Congratulations to all the SUBC athletes and also to our coaches – Head Coach Phil Bourguignon, and coaches Mark Prater, Alan Bennett and Mike Doyle with assistance from Mini – Serp. As always the work ethic of our coaches was outstanding .
