Foundation Lunch Hear Progress Report

At a lunch for Foundation members and alumni last Friday Chris Noel brought the attending group up to date on Foundation progress in its first full year. Chris reported that to 30th June 2006 the Foundation had received initial pledges from 43 alumni and supporters. Of these 42 had made initial or complete donations totalling $310,000 and had given further pledges of $391,000 over the next four years.

The Foundation had set an initial aim of raising around $1m in pledges and donations from alumni and Chris reported that around another 50 alumni need to join the Foundation by June 2007 for us to reach this goal.

Good news for alumni living in the USA and the UK was imparted?those alumni can donate through Sydney University Foundations registered in each of those countries and get tax-deductibility.

The Foundation also aims to begin approaching corporate sponsors in 2007 with a view to raising another $1m to 2010 to match the alumni target.

Chris emphasized to the group in attendance how important it was that they talk to other alumni from their era and encourage them to join in the support they have given. ?It?s only through the personal commitment that you as donors can communicate to your fellow alumni how important and vital is support for our Foundation to the success and the future of Sydney Uni rowing.

Chris also outlined support expenditure on the rowing program assisted by the Foundation in 2006-7.The two primary areas of equipment support will be the purchase of 6 single sculls and one quad scull start and new TIP/TAP program aimed at students who have excelled in other sports who want to try rowing and students who have rowed before and want to continue rowing at non-representative level. This program will be based at Glebe and will co-ordinate with the Women?s Intermediate program.

In addition the Foundation has assisted in the purchase of a new Youth Eight which has arrived and will be used in the Interstate Youth Cup in Adelaide at the end of this month.

Chris thanked those alumni who have strongly supported and encouraged the Foundation and others who have strongly supported in the past. In particular Charles Moore, Paul Espie, Steve Newnham, Eric Carter, Austin Curtin, Ian Plater and John Boultbee.

Spotted in attendance among the crowd was 70?s alumnus Brendan Lynch who is now well-established in the business of sports consultancy having just arrived back from working with a major NZ Super 12 Club. Taking a short break from beginning their legal careers were Stew Old and Dom Bressan recent lightweight representatives for SUBC. Two members of the ?Flamin Galahs? Oxfam Trailwalker team, Tom McCann and Laird Abernethy arrived for last minute training before joining Jeremy Curtin and Gian Minns in trek towards Newcastle next week.At a lunch for Foundation members and alumni last Friday Chris Noel brought the attending group up to date on Foundation progress in its first full year.
