The Australian Selection regatta concluded on Friday, with Men’s Head Coach Noel Donaldson reading the preliminary list of squads required for further trialling. This concluded a huge week of racing for all athletes involved, with seven 2000m races being completed over a five day period. SUBC athletes performed strongly throughout the entire regatta, in particular our heavyweight sweepers and scullers performed extremely well. Francis Hegerty (SUBC Captain) finished the week being ranked 1st U/23 Hvy Sweep and 19th overall heavyweight athletes attending the regatta. Nick Hudson also performed well being ranked 2nd U/23 Hvy Sculler and 13th overall heavyweight scullers attending the regatta. Congratulations Francis and Nick.
Francis and Nick were not the only SUBC athletes to perform well at the regatta, Matt Ryan, Tim Williams and Michael Valli also raced well, with the results improving all the way through the week. John Boultbee (SUBC VC President) noted that the results had really launched the guys into the centre of attention in their category.
Tim O’Callaghan has been named to further trial for a spot in the open lightweight four, which is a major achievement for Tim. With the Athens Olympics only around the corner, Tim understands the importance of being selected into this crew in 2003 and will use this experience to building a platform towards Olympic selection in 2004.
Stewart Old has also been asked back to further trial in the Lightweight sculling category. Stew started the week a little shakily, but overcame this quickly and improved his results right through to Friday. This has earned him a spot to trial for a spot in the U/23 team.
Overall the whole squad performed well and should be congratulated for their individual performances and also congratulations to Joe and Andy for their contributions to these results. Well Done.
